With so many choices all over the web, the search for the perfect family photographer in Maine can be quite the task. Yes, there’s the obvious thought of “Oh I want pretty pictures”, but there is definitely more to choosing the perfect fit for your family. That’s why I decided to provide you with three tips that I hope bring you a few steps closer to finding a photographer that will capture your family exactly as you hoped for.

1. How much experience should your photographer have?

Simply put, the more experience someone has, the more time they’ve had to perfect their craft. Time to understand lighting, posing, how to bring the best out in your family, tricks to keep young kids engaged, consistent editing style, technical skills ( no images blurry/out of focus or photos too light/ too dark), and the list goes on. At Nikki Martin Photography, I have spent over 13 years working with families. This brings me to the importance of not only paying attention to how many years of experience a photographer has but also how often families are in front of their cameras. My personal opinion is you can’t “specialize” in something you barely photograph. Since I started my business I photograph maternity, newborns, babies first year, and families exclusively.

2. Is their work consistent?

While looking through a photographer’s portfolio and social media do you see consistency from session to session? Image to image? A telltale sign that someone may be inexperienced or hasn’t settled on a style is when each session looks different than the one, almost as if two different photographers took the photographs. One of the biggest problems with this is you won’t truly know what the end result will be when it’s your family’s turn. Location or cloudy vs sunny days can make small variations in the result but ultimately the person’s work shouldn’t be drastically different.

3. Do they have positive reviews on Google?

Positive Google reviews and many of them (NIKKI HAS OVER 50 CLIENT REVIEWS!! COME CHECK THEM OUT) speak volumes about a client’s experience. It’s easy to get a negative review but for busy folks, especially with families, taking the time to write a positive review truly means you hit it right outta the park! Did your photographer have good communication? Did your family feel comfortable? Did they offer extras you wanted like quality products or a client wardrobe you could borrow from? Pretty pictures are wonderful but an EXPERIENCE worth sharing with others is pure gold.
